Spring roof and gutter check

Look for winter damage from the ground, and get water moving.

5 min read

Winter weather, storms and falling debris are hard on roofs and gutters. A spring check finds problems before spring rains turn them into leaks.

From the ground

  • Use binoculars to look for missing, curled or cracked shingles
  • Check flashing around chimneys, vents and skylights
  • Look for sagging gutters and loose downspouts
  • Check ceilings and the attic for stains or damp spots

Gutters

  • Clear leaves and debris so water flows freely
  • Make sure downspouts carry water several feet away from the foundation
  • Tighten loose hangers

Stay safe

Ladder work is one of the most common causes of serious home injuries. Use a sturdy ladder on level ground with someone holding it, and leave roof walking to a professional.
