Decks take a beating from sun and weather. A yearly check keeps them safe and extends their life.
Check
- Railings and stairs: push firmly; nothing should move
- Boards: probe with a screwdriver for soft, rotten wood
- Where the deck attaches to the house: look for rust, loose fasteners or rot
- Posts and footings for movement or cracking
Maintain
- Clean and reseal wood decks as the product recommends
- Replace damaged boards and rusty fasteners
- Keep grills a safe distance from railings and the house
