Hi there,
The three fall jobs that matter most
- Heating: replace the filter, turn the system on before the first cold night, and book a yearly service for gas, oil or propane systems.
- Outdoor water: disconnect hoses and drain outdoor faucets before the first freeze. More in Winterize outdoor faucets.
- Gutters: clear them once most leaves have fallen.
Notes for your climate
Cold winters: get the roof rake out of the shed now. Hot and humid: check for storm damage from the end of hurricane season. Hot and dry: clear dry debris from the roof. Mild marine: check drainage before the rains.
This season's safety check
Test your carbon monoxide alarms. If you have any fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage, you should have one on every level and near bedrooms. See Get your heating ready.
Reader question
"Do I really need my chimney inspected every year if I only use the fireplace a few times?" Yearly inspection is the standard advice, because animals, debris and damage can block a chimney even without much use. Cleaning is only needed when the inspection finds buildup.
See you next season,
