A heating system that fails on the first cold night means an emergency call. Fall prep keeps it running safely.
Do it yourself
- Replace the furnace or heat pump filter
- Clear vents and returns of furniture and rugs
- Turn the heat on before the first cold snap and listen for unusual noises or smells
- Test carbon monoxide alarms, and install them on every level and near sleeping areas

A yearly professional inspection is especially important for gas, oil and propane systems, which can produce carbon monoxide if something goes wrong.
Space heaters
Keep them at least three feet from anything that can burn, plug them directly into a wall outlet, and turn them off when you leave the room or go to sleep.
