Before the season
- Have the chimney inspected yearly and cleaned when needed by a qualified chimney professional
- Make sure there's a chimney cap to keep out animals and debris
- Check that the damper opens and closes properly
Burn safely
- Burn only dry, seasoned wood, never trash or cardboard
- Use a screen and keep things that burn well away
- Put ashes in a metal container with a lid, outside and away from the house
