Winterize outdoor faucets, hoses and sprinklers

Prevent burst pipes before the first freeze.

4 min read

In any area that freezes, water left in outdoor pipes can freeze, expand and crack them. It takes an hour to prevent.

Steps

  1. Disconnect and drain garden hoses
  2. Shut off the indoor valve to outdoor faucets if you have one, then open the outdoor faucet to drain it
  3. Add insulated faucet covers
  4. Have sprinkler systems blown out or drained following the manufacturer's instructions
  5. Drain and store outdoor fountains and rain barrels

Mild climates

If you rarely freeze, keep faucet covers handy for cold snaps instead.
