Prevent and handle frozen pipes

A burst pipe can release a lot of water quickly. Prevention is easy, and knowing what to do if a pipe freezes limits damage.

In a cold snap

• Let faucets on outside walls drip slightly
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air in
• Keep the heat on, at no lower than about 55°F, even if you're away
• Keep the garage door closed if water lines run through it

If a pipe freezes

1. Keep the faucet open
2. Warm the pipe gently with a hair dryer, heating pad or warm towels
3. Never use an open flame
4. If you can't reach it or it doesn't thaw, call a licensed plumber

If a pipe bursts

Shut off the main water valve right away, turn off electricity in the area if water is near outlets and it's safe to reach the panel, and call a plumber.
