Ice dams form when heat from the house melts snow on the roof, and the water refreezes at the colder edge. Water can then back up under shingles and leak inside.
Long-term fixes
- Better attic insulation and air sealing, so less heat reaches the roof
- Good attic ventilation
- Have a professional assess persistent problems
During winter
- Use a roof rake from the ground to pull snow off the lower few feet of roof
- Never climb onto an icy roof
- Don't chip at ice with tools, which damages shingles
- Watch for very heavy snow loads on flat or older roofs
