Winter power outage safety

Stay warm safely and avoid carbon monoxide.

5 min read

Winter storms can cut power for days. Most outage deaths and injuries come from carbon monoxide and unsafe heating, not the cold itself.

Carbon monoxide rules

  • Never run a generator, grill or camp stove indoors, in a garage or near windows; keep generators at least 20 feet from the house
  • Never use a gas oven or stove to heat your home
  • Have battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms
  • If an alarm sounds or anyone feels dizzy or sick, get outside and call 911

Stay warm

  • Gather everyone in one room and close off others
  • Layer clothing and blankets
  • Go to a warming center if your home gets too cold

Before the season

  • Flashlights and batteries, not candles
  • Water and food that doesn't need cooking
  • A plan for medications and medical equipment that need power
